Both Byzantine and late medieval Northern European paintings inspired the composition. Christ is depicted waist-deep in the River Jordan; above him is a dove representing the Holy Ghost, and at the top of the drawing is the blessing hand of God the Father. John the Baptist and an angel holding a towel stand on the banks.
The text is from the third chapter of the Book of Matthew:
Hic est Filius meus dilectus.
This is my beloved Son.
I wrote it in a medieval textura quadrata script in black and red ink.
