The Blessed Virgin and the Apostles are shown seated on benches in the Cenacle, with tongues of flame above their haloes. Seven does representing the gifts of the Holy Ghost are drawn in the border, as are three Old Testament prefigurements: Moses receiving the Law, the immolation of Elijah’s sacrifice, and the widow’s cruse. The four Latin Church Fathers (Ss. Augustine, Gregory the Great, Jerome and Ambrose) appear in the corners.
15th century panel paintings, tapestries and prints influenced this drawing. Artists whose work I studied when drawing it include Hans Multscher and the Master of the Salem Holy Altars.
