GLORIOUS MYSTERIES of the ROSARY
PRINT by DANIEL MITSUI
This print is based on an ink drawing, commissioned as part of a set of three, along with the Joyful Mysteries and the Sorrowful Mysteries
of the Rosary.
The image is composed of a title, five quatrefoils and four roundels inside a decorative framework of vines, leaves and tendrils. A butterfly in the bas-de-page symbolizes the Resurrection.
The five quatrefoils contain scenes of the five Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary: the Resurrection and Ascension of Christ, the Descent of the Holy Ghost, and the Assumption and Coronation of the Blessed Virgin.
The four Great Fathers of the Latin Church - St. Gregory the Great, St. Jerome, St. Augustine and St. Ambrose - appear in roundels between the larger scenes.
Artists whose work influenced this include Dieric Bouts, Hans Multscher, the Master of the Life of the Virgin, the Master of the St. Lucy Legend and the Master of the Salem Holy Altars.
The roundels of the prophets were drawn on separate pieces of vellum and edited into the print file. The print is about one and a half times larger than the original drawings.
Dimensions: 15" × 20"
