SORROWFUL MYSTERIES of the ROSARY
PRINT by DANIEL MITSUI
This print is based on an ink drawing, commissioned as part of a set of three, along with the Joyful Mysteries and the Glorious Mysteries
of the Rosary.
The image is composed of a title, five quatrefoils and four roundels inside a decorative framework of plants associated with the Passion: olive, hyssop, myrrh, grape, passionflower and the species of jujube that was the source of the Crown of Thorns.
The five quatrefoils contain scenes of the five Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary: the Agony in the Garden, the Flagellation, the Crowning with Thorns, the Carrying of the Cross and the Crucifixion.
The four winged creatures representing the Four Evangelists appear in roundels between the larger scenes.
Artists whose work influenced this include Hans Holbein the Elder, Jan Polack, Hieronymus Bosch, Gerard David, Martin Schongauer, Rogier van der Weyden, the Master of the Peterborough Psalter, the Master of St. Severin and Nikolaus Obilman.
The roundels of the prophets were drawn on separate pieces of vellum and edited into the print file. The print is about one and a half times larger than the original drawings.
Dimensions: 15" × 20"
