GREAT CLOCKS of CHRISTENDOM: NUREMBURG SCHAUHAUS

Clock on the Schauhaus in Nuremberg, built in 1522 and destroyed in 1811. Figures of the Holy Roman Emperor and his seven Electors flank the clock, with half-figures representing the six known planets. This illustration is from Karl Alexander von Heideloff's Die Ornamentik des Mittelalters.
