ST. CHARLES de FOUCAULD
DRAWING by DANIEL MITSUI

ST. CHARLES de FOUCAULD

Charles de Foucauld was a French explorer, ethnographer, and geographer. Profoundly moved by his experiences in North Africa, he entered religious life in 1890, eventually being ordained a priest and settling as a hermit in the Algerian desert. He befriended the local Tuareg people and studied their language and customs. In 1916, he was dragged from his hermitage by Bedouin members of the Senussi Order; when the kidnapping attempt was interrupted by the arrival of French soldiers, Charles was shot dead.

Charles de Foucauld was canonized in 1922. I drew him in the moment before his death, in from of his hermitage. The rifle barrel and the column of smoke from his campfire form a cross. The emblem of the Sacred Heart has the name Jesus Christ written in Arabic calligraphy around it.
