MILLEFLEUR ANIMALS
DRAWING by DANIEL MITSUI
This irregularly shaped drawing in the style of a millefleur tapestry displays several animal emblems that are traditional Christain symbols. These are: the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei, both slain and triumphant, a symbol of Jesus Christ; a lion reviving its dead cubs, a symbol of the Resurrection; three fish, a symbol of the Holy Trinity; and a tree bearing barnacle geese. According to the medieval bestiaries, barnacle geese are birds born from shells that grow spontaneously from logs, without parents. Thus, they serve as symbols of the virginal conception of Jesus Christ.
