ANNUNCIATION to the SHEPHERDS
PRINT by DANIEL MITSUI
In the picture, an angel gives news of Jesus Christ’s birth to two shepherds watching their flock; I borrowed rustic details such as the barking sheepdog and the bagpipe from depictions in late medieval Books of Hours. I used medieval spelling and punctuation in the text of the angelic hymn Gloria in excelsis Deo. The text is set in Benedict, a typeface that I designed myself..
The print is based on my ink drawings. It is about one and a half times larger than the originals.
Dimensions: 8" × 15"
