ST. IBAR
PRINT by DANIEL MITSUI
St. Ibar was a former druid who embraced Christianity and evangelized Wexford in Ireland, in the years before the arrival of St. Patrick. His name is also spelled Ivar and Iomhar, and Latinized as Evander. Here, I imitated the iconic image of St. Patrick indicating
the shamrock as a symbol of the Trinity, but with a three-leafed sprig
of Irish oak in place of the clover. This references the druidic
background of St. Ibar. He wears the Johannine tonsure favored by the
early Celtic church.
Trying to think of a Christian connection to the Classical Evander,
who transmitted Greek culture to Rome, I thought of the intersecting
Greek and Latin Alphabets drawn on the floor during the ceremony of
the dedication of a church. So here, I put the two alphabets, running
in opposite directions, around the halo.
The print is about one and a half times larger than the original artwork.
