PEDRO de CORPA and COMPANIONS (MARTYRS of GEORGIA)
PRINT by DANIEL MITSUI
Pedro de Corpa and his companions were Franciscan missionaries to the lands currently occupied by the states of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. The friars preached the Gospel to the native Guale in the late 16th century. In 1597, a chief who disputed Catholic teaching on the indissolubility of marriage murdered Pedro, and led his followers to kill four other friars: Miguel de Añon, Antonio de Badajoz, Blas de Rodríguez, and Francisco de Veráscola. A sixth, Francisco de Avila, was kidnapped and tortured.
The beatification process for the Martyrs of Georgia was begun in 1984.
The surrounding ornament includes plants and animals native to Georgia: live oak branches and Spanish Moss, parakeets, and sand dollars; and peaches, which were introduced by the missionaries.
The print is about one and a half times larger than the original artwork.
Dimensions: 8" × 12"
