GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO
PRINT by DANIEL MITSUI

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO

This depicts the Annunciation to the Shepherds at Christmas. It includes small emblems representing two prefigurements of the Birth of Jesus Christ from the Old Testament: the dream of Pharaoh’s butler, and the flowering of Aaron’s rod; and two events that happened about the same time as the Nativity, according to medieval chroniclers: the destruction of the Temple of Peace at Rome, and the first appearance of the Star of Bethlehem to the three Magi.

Surrounding the central image of the shepherds and the angelic host are a banderole bearing the words Gloria in Excelsis Deo and emblems of the constellations Sagittarius and Capricorn.

The print is based on one of my ink drawings. It is about one and a half times larger than the original.

Dimensions: 6" × 8"
