This is a calligraphic treatment of a couplet from the Shih Ching, the Chinese Classic of Poetry. The Shih Ching includes 305 poems written in the 11th-7th centuries BC; its compilation is traditionally attributed to Confucius.
This couplet is taken from a poem described by James Legge as narrative and allusive, describing some officer,in a time of disorder and misgovernment, urging on his brothers the duty of maintaining their own virtue,and of observing the greatest caution. He translates it: The dove coos gently in the bush, / Then wings to heaven its flight.
I surrounded the calligraphed ideograms with ornament of cherry and mulberry branches.
